Bringing in the cheddar for our clients

We at Siren have been fortunate enough to support the wonderful family business that is The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company with its PR and marketing for four years now. It is a business that we LOVE and that has been a pleasure to work with, and we value immensely the huge responsibility that this artisanal company with a rich heritage has entrusted us with.

 

The business was founded in 2003 by John and Katherine Spencer who, almost 20 years later, are still hands-on in the day-to-day of the business - demonstrating loving care and passion in everything they do.

In lockdown, the pair were fully responsible for the business’s entire operation as they, like many other small business owners, were forced to absorb and adapt to the huge impact of Covid across every part of their production and supply chain.

From production to packaging and from fully transitioning to online sales through the e-commerce platform of their newly built website, it was a time of change, challenge and growth.

 

Engaging our food and drink comms agency experience

Our role initially was to support their move online in order to enhance their already thriving bricks and mortar destination in Cheddar, where they produced, age, and sell their award-winning ranges of cheddar cheese; the only cheddar made in Cheddar.

Using only fresh, local, unpasteurised milk, John and Katherine have made it their mission to preserve the original character of their namesake. This, they believe, is their responsibility and privilege when producing cheddar cheese. It is then, in their nearby working dairy, that the handmade, artisanal magic happens, by the hands of their skilled cheesemakers. From milk reception, addition of starter cultures, cutting and draining, to cheddaring and dressing, – everything is done by hand -; even the delivery of the cheeses to the local caves, where a selection of their cheeses are matured in the famous natural Cheddar Gorge Caves.

 

Over the course of the last four years, we have focused our food marketing on:

  • Driving more traffic to the website via strategically placed food PR media coverage
  • Growing ongoing awareness of their award-winning cheeses, fantastic legacy and outstanding reputation, of cheese making, achieved through a series of influencer trips to their home of cheese making in Somerset
  • Building a sales-driven awareness programme of the handmade Cheddar cheeses through an ongoing media and influencer gifting programme
  • Advising on the build of a new more e-commerce-based website
  • Advising on wider food communications across their marketing channels

    Our continued partnership is based on the commercial needs of their business, our expertise of the business’s relevant media landscape and consumer market, and a genuine belief and passion for what The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company stands for and produces.

    The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company is a small business that has thrived throughout one of the most difficult economic circumstances ever witnessed, and will undoubtedly continue to do so.
