We’re all going on a summer holiday

June 21, 2021

Where the Sirens are holidaying at home this summer.

This time last year, when we were all drafting up our Backyard Adventure blogs to celebrate the small freedoms the summer with some easing of lockdown allowed us, we didn’t think that 12 months on we’d still be restricted with what overseas travels permitted.

With us all facing another summer confined to this little island of ours, we’re busy planning trips to see friends and family, exploring places we’ve never visited before, trying our hand at new experiences, and heading to some of our beloved favourite UK holiday spots.

Top of the list: holidays in Cornwall

Cornwall is a perennial favourite among team Siren. Tammy has already taken a springtime venture to the south-west this year and Rachel is planning her annual summer family holiday to the county.

Having never visited, Naomi is planning to do Cornwall for the first time, and is excited to try her hand at some surfing lessons while she’s there! Maddy whet her appetite with a trip there last summer, and since then has bought and renovated a campervan. She said:

“Last year we had a hire car and we kept talking about our dream of owning a campervan. This year we have the van and can't wait to stay in the incredible beach-view campsites of Cornwall over the summer. I’m most looking forward to waking up to ocean sunrises and cooking our dinner overlooking the water.”

Making up for lost time

Of course, we’re all looking forward to spending quality time with our loved ones and heading back to old haunts. Rachel is looking forward to family time up in Northumberland. And Anya too, she’ll be reuniting with her pet dogs on Holy Island. Sarah’s got the covid-safe extended family holiday nailed:

“I have a week booked in a cottage near my sister’s (just outside York) in July for my niece's birthday. My parents and grandma will be in the next-door cottage. It’s all planned so we can stay in our own places but still have BBQs and fun outside together and hopefully meet the possible restrictions.”

York’s calling Phoebe back too. She’s hoping to head back to her old university town for the races. She’s mostly looking forward to being in a crowd of very happy drunk people.

Move, move, move

After months confined to our homes there’s a huge appetite for active breaks. Maddy’s taking the campervan to North Wales, she said:

“We've only ever driven through Wales en route to the ferry terminal and a day trip to Cardiff so looking forward to exploring more of the countryside. Most looking forward to hiking Snowdonia, cold water swimming and having fun on trampolines inside the caves at Bounce Below Snowdon.”

And Anya’s taking to the mountains too, with Helvellyn in the lakes and Snowdonia in Wales at the top of her list this summer.

Getting active isn’t just for the countryside. Rachel S is opting for city staycations. She wants to jam-pack her weekends in Edinburgh and Manchester by visiting all the landmarks, hidden gems, and local independent restaurants.

Dimitra’s to-do list is similar, staying in London though, and heading to a hotel with a rooftop pool, numerous restaurants, bars, live music, and a remote working space. Dreamy!

It’s the little things…

Getting back to some of the everyday fun is a high priority on all of our lists. Sarah’s looking forward to a summer of barbecues and sight-seeing, visiting all the London museums with her son, “when they hopefully aren't as busy as they will be when the international tourists are allowed back in”.

And Katie’s crossing her fingers for the return of festival season. She’ll also be taking in the fresh air in the Highlands and exploring more of the Peak District on her doorstep.

And some of the younger Sirens are desperate to get back into a club. For Phoebe it’s the cheesy tunes and sticky floors that are calling her, as well as “generally celebrating all things non-COVID”. Hear, hear!
