With all the uncertainty around whether or not we’ll be able to head overseas this for a holiday this year, team Siren has fully embraced a summer of exploring our glorious shores.
We’re fortunate to have plenty of inspiration close to home in the form of some of our lovely clients. From joining a small group tour and heading off the beaten track or taking in the iconic sights of the capital from the river, to escaping realities with a boutique hotel getaway and indulging on some of our nation’s greatest delicacies – we’ve got you covered!
Head out of the city on a tour of Britain’s beauty spots
Rabbie’s is a responsible travel, small group tour provider. With departures from across the UK, including London, Manchester and Edinburgh, all of our regionally-based Sirens are planning their Rabbie’s getaway.
Maddy recently took the day trip to Winchester for the Bombay Sapphire Gin Distillery tour. We’re not sure how much of it she remembers, but she assures us she had a fantastic time! Personally I think I’ll look to head as far away from London as I can this summer and explore the wilds of the Scottish Highlands.
London’s best-kept sightseeing secret
The greatest and most glamorous way to visit the top attractions in the capital (while there are fewer tourists in town – yes please!) is to take to the water. Flanking the Thames is a huge number of the most iconic locations in London – there’s The Tower of London, The Shard, Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, The O2 and Shakespeare’s Globe, to name just a few, and that’s before you take into account the world-famous bridges. There’s simply no other way to view all from such a phenomenal perspective as sailing past (or under).
Uber Boat by Thames Clippers even has stops close by all of these must-visit spots with 23 piers along the river. And with all-day hop-on, hop-off River Roamer tickets available, you’ll often find a Siren or two quoting Ratty… ““Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”
Indulge in a hotel night in the capital
Whether you’re a Londoner or not, a night in a boutique hotel in the heart of the city is a great way to get away from day-to-day life. Karma Sanctum Soho hotel is based in the lively and vibrant area of Soho, the hotel offers a truly rock ‘n’ roll experience. The 30 eclectic styled guest rooms are spacious and exude a quirky aesthetic that’s a mix of luxury and opulence. Home to some of the biggest rockstar legends, you never know who you may be seated beside in their new Japanese inspired restaurant Wild Heart Bar & Shokudo.
Enjoy the warm summer days on the rooftop sipping on their varied cocktail list and indulging in their delicious Japanese plates. It’s a calm oasis in the city centre but still close enough to the fun and action that London and specifically Soho offers.
Cheese-tastic holiday treats
I don’t know about you, but whenever I head on a getaway it’s the tasty food that I’m looking forward to the most and remember most fondly. Many holiday memories are centred around eating and drinking, whether it’s the prawns and rosé enjoyed sat by a Spanish marina, the incredible olives (with another glass of rosé) in Greece, or a deliciously dirty burger from NYC.
UK holidays aren’t short of local delicacies to enjoy, and our number one recommendation is to head down to Somerset for some authentic Cheddar by the one and only Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company. My mouth is watering at just the thought… mmm…
Inclusive days out in the UK
If you or someone you know has a condition that means they have accessibility requirements that can make planning a day out trickier, The Rough Guide to Accessible Britain is here to help.
Packed full of reviews of venues and attractions all across the UK, with details of the fun to be had (as well as the accessibility features) at theme parks, beaches, museums, galleries, indoor skydiving and much, much more, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Whooshing around the country, and planting trees as we go
We’ve declared this as our year of train travel. As the greenest mode of transport, we’re already a fan, and with tech developer, Whoosh’s Real-Time Journey Dashboard, rail is set to become even better. Using a unique QR code at your seat you can access a world of information that takes all the anxiety of travelling away. You can keep track of your journey progress (a bit like the map screen on a plane), report any issues directly to the operator and (our favourite) order food and drink directly to your seat, all through your own mobile phone!
And what’s more, if you book your train journey through Whoosh’s sister company, Trainhugger, they’ll plant a tree too!
